Archerfishes are a small family containing five species well known for their fascinating ability to shoot down insects. They achieve this by forcing drops of water by gill pressure along a tube formed by the tongue and a groove on the palate. Only the mouth sticks out of the water the eyes remain submerged so the fish has to not only judge the distance but also compensate for refraction. Distances of five feet or more have been recorded when striking prey resting on leaves of plants, they can shoot many times in rapid succession and are very accurate.
