CRUSTACEANS

Posted in Fish Feeding Systems

Crustaceans are gaining very rapidly in popularity within the marine aquarium trade. Not only are many crustaceans colourful and mobile but they often provide a usefull scavenging service, clearing up tiny morsels of food that would otherwise be a potential source of pollution. The phylum Crustacea is a large one with over 40,000 species, many of which are of little interest to the marine aquarist. it also includes species that are commonly but wrongly attributed to other groups; barnacles (despite a mollusc-like appearance) are a good example. By far the largest group within the phylum is the class Malacostraca, which Contains almost three quarters of all known crustaceans. The vast majority, and the most popular crustaceans within the marine hobby, are decapods. As the name suggests, they have ten legs, which are arranged in five pairs, although some of the forward pairs may have developed into pincers or claws. Suitable decapods for the marine aquarium include crabs, lobsters and shrimps.Recommeneded feeding system Aquaze Marine.
