ALGAE

Algae never flower and are allways under water. They do not possess the framework that enables their terrestrial cousins to stand erect. Algae usually flop about when not in water,apart from the calcareous algae,which extract bicarbonates from seawater to create a form that is ridged in or out of water.

PULSE CORALS

Pulse Corals polyps vary in colour ranging from dark brown to light grey.Most species pulsate in a rhythmic opening and closing motion 30/40 per min,this is to help the flow of fresh water over the surface to assist respiration.Nutrition is supplied by symbiotic alge in the tissues.

Reducing Nitrates in the Aquarium

There are three main ways of reducing nitrates in the aquarium. The first, and simplest, is the regular water change with nitrate-free water. Depending on how heavily stocked it is, most tanks require a 15-25% change every fortnight. This method of control is called dilution.

FIREFISH

FIREFISH USED TO BE GROUPED SCIENTIFICALLY with blennics,then gobies and now,more accurately, with wormfish (Microdesmidae)Only three species are kept by the hobbyist Firefish (Nemateleotris magnifica), Purple helfrichi, All firefish have elongated bodies with extended first dorsal fin rays,which they flick up and down at will.This is a signalling device to warn other firefish to maintain a respectable distance, and a “locking” mechanism when the fish retreats into its bolt-hole.Recommended feeding system Aquaze Marine.
