This family contains the mailed or armored Catfishes of South America and Trinidad. The flanks are covered by a double series of overlapping bony plates; the head and back are also similarly covered in some species. The adipose fin is supported by a mobile spine, and a large spine also occurs in the dorsal fin. With such protection it is not surprising that even large fishes leave them strictly alone. The mouth is small and toothless and is surmounted by one or two pairs of barbels. The eyes have a limited movement in their sockets, a fact which adds considerably to their droll appearance. Like the Cobitidae, these fishes are adapted for intestinal respiration. The swim bladder occurs in two parts and is surrounded by a bony capsule.Recommended feedlng system Aquaze tropical.
