Hard corals are polyp colonies which remove calcium carbonate from the sea water to form calcareous skeletons in which they live.When they die new polyps build their skeletons on top of the old ones in efect growing the reef.Hard corals are very very slow growing and are very long lived.Corals need to be in waters of 21 C well oxygenated unpolluted and have high intensity sunlight such as tropical and equatorial regins.
